Francis Chan has encouraged us to
READ, THINK, PRAY and DO!
He asks us to find verses for each day [6 days] and go through the list as we reflect.
How is this going for you?
Right now I am reflecting on 2 Peter 1:3-8 and verse 5 almost jumped off the page-
Do your best to improve your faith.
How to do this?? Peter tells us in the next sentence.
You can do this by adding goodness, understanding, self-control, patience, devotion to God, concern for others, and love.
How do I do this, how do I add this beautiful list of things to my faith and then how does play out every day? I think it means choosing to act in goodness when I am confronted with the opportunity to NOT act in goodness, to be understanding when I would rather NOT, to exercise self-control when everything in me is crying out to NOT, to be patient when impatience threatens to overcome me, to be devoted to God instead of my own selfish instincts, having concern for others- placing their needs above my own, and LOVE. Loving those who can be so NOT lovely.
Peter is saying to me, if you will grow in all these ways, Anita, it will show that what you know about our Lord Jesus Christ has made your [life] useful and meaningful. [vs8]
Then he issues a warning...
But if you don’t grow, you are like someone who is nearsighted or blind, and you have forgotten that your past sins are forgiven. [vs9]
It reminds me of what we read in James about asking for wisdom without faith is like a person who looks at her reflection in a mirror and when she walks away forgets what she looks like.
I do NOT want to be blind and forgetful about all that has been done for me or just who I am in Jesus.
What to do? What to DO?
I will be trying to keep my eyes open and recognize the opportunities to add all the items on Peter's list to my faith today.
